While the next Governor's race in California isn't until 2018, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom (D. CA) is already running for the race. I for the most part like Newsom and being that California (where I currently reside) is a big state with some big issues, marijuana legalization is one issue that has to be resolved. When it comes to this issue, I am on board with Newsom over Governor Jerry Brown (D. CA). Newsom is already making marijuana legalization a campaign issue:
I chaired a Blue Ribbon Commission of experts to chart a responsible path to marijuana legalization, and our new report makes it clear that protecting children and promoting public health must be paramount.
A 2014 survey of 12th graders from the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that nearly half of those surveyed had used marijuana – significantly more than tobacco.
That is the failure of the status quo: When we shirk marijuana use to illicit markets, drug dealers can continue selling marijuana to kids without IDs and targeting the youngest, most impressionable members of our communities.
But legalizing recreational marijuana use for adults – if done right – would bring the industry out of the shadows and into a regulated mainstream with oversight to protect our children and promote public health and safety.

It’s time for California to move beyond the failed laws prohibiting marijuana use and toward a more productive future based on responsible regulation.
The Commission’s report explains that legalizing marijuana gives us a new opportunity to provide better prevention and education programs, which would limit youth access to marijuana and keep California’s students in the classroom instead of tangled up in the criminal justice system.
The process for legalization will be long. We have to take the time to carefully consider all of the effects of legalization – both intended and unintended – and ensure the pieces are in place for responsible oversight and regulation.
Now’s the time to talk about it so that when marijuana is legalized, it’s done so in a way that protects our children and benefits our communities.
I’m committed to this process and to continuing the conversation in California – I hope you’ll join me: Will you add your name with mine and pledge your support for safe and responsible marijuana legalization?
