Seventy-one years ago in the small Connecticut town of Preston two Hellcat pilots were on a mission for the U.S. Navy to test out a new state of the art radar system that would eventually be used in the war. The year was 1944. Both pilots were out of the Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Base in Charlestown, R.I.
At exactly 11:03 Pm they were on one of their passes at one another testing out the radar system when they collided in mid air and both pilots died. Then they were forgotten.
Until last year when a local VFW erected a small memorial plaque in their honor and I became aware of this story.
I have written a book about their lives, who they left behind, the crash and the new proposed memorial. It is entitled "Forgotten" and you can donate to help publish this book at the link below. All proceeds from the book after it is published will be donated to the memorial fund.
