No one ever said it would be used for science.
Turtlesque Mitch McConnell is suddenly
racing to defund Planned Parenthood following that misleading video that purported to catch Planned Parenthood employees trafficking fetal tissue donations for medical research. But McConnell only has himself to thank for making those very same fetal tissue donations legal in the first place—he voted for it back in 1993, presumably when the GOP still knew what the word "science" meant. Laura Bassett
reports:
In 1988, the Reagan administration began a moratorium on fetal tissue from elective abortions being used in scientific research. But Congress lifted that ban in 1993 when it passed the National Institutes of Health Revitalization Act, which allowed research on human fetal tissue regardless of whether the tissue came from a voluntary abortion. McConnell voted for that bill, as did Reps. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) and Fred Upton (R-Mich.), all of whom have condemned Planned Parenthood in the past two weeks for its involvement in the practice.
“What we saw was very, very disturbing," McConnell said of the video on Monday.
You wanna fight this defunding fight—go for it, Mitch.
It's gonna be spectacular.
