A lot of pundits thought that Donald Trump had doomed himself with his comments questioning John McCain's war heroism. A lot of pundits were wrong:

courtesy of Huffington Post Pollster, aggregates all national polls of the GOP presidential primary. Trump, of course, is that bright red line that's been shooting skyward since the start of June. And that vertical black stripe represents, as close as possible, the date when Trump started dumping on McCain (July 18).
If you knew anything about the nature of the Republican base, which celebrates the very kind of outsider anger that Trump brings to politics, then this graph won't surprise you. But if you're a Beltway hack who venerates John McCain, then your worldview ought to be shaken a bit by now.
The question is, will these same folks who misjudged Trump's trajectory so badly show any humility going forward? That's like asking whether The Donald will ever cop to wearing a hairpiece: Don't count on it.
