Well respected James Hansen, former director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies and 30-years a pioneer in climate science, directs the Program on Climate Science, Awareness and Solutions, at The Earth Institute of Columbia University.
The Washington Post described Hansen as "The world’s most famous climate scientist..."
On 23 July 2015 Hansen's team of 17 put up this Discussion Paper in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics (ACP) An interactive open-access journal of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), the international scientific journal dedicated to the publication and public discussion of high-quality studies investigating the Earth's atmosphere and the underlying chemical and physical processes. Fareed Zakaria interviewed Hansen in this video clip.
This team says
... We conclude that multi-meter sea level rise would become practically unavoidable. Social disruption and economic consequences of such large sea level rise could be devastating. It is not difficult to imagine that conflicts arising from forced migrations and economic collapse might make the planet ungovernable, threatening the fabric of civilization.
Separately, Andrea Dutton with others published 10 July 2015 in
Science "
Sea-level rise due to polar ice-sheet mass loss during past warm periods" contrasting 4 recent warm inter-glacial times showing 3 variable levels of temperature in ° C, CO2 in ppm and sea in meters (
graphic, bottom left):
today (+1° C relative to pre-industrial temperature);
125,000 years ago as Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5e, called the Eemian, began
(this too was +1° C relative to pre-industrial temperature);
400,000 y.a. MIS11 (+1° to 2° C relative to pre-industrial temp.); and
3,000,000 y.a. end of Mid-Pliocene Epoch warm period (+2° to 3° C relative to pre-industrial temp.). High water at +35 meter sea level rise inundation
(Beloit College) image here shows sea level that
UCMP-Berkley estimates about 30 meters higher than today.
During MIS5e, around 124,000–119,000 years ago, the last inter-glacial period before the present (Holocene) probably had global mean surface temperatures at least +2° C warmer but as it ended temperature fell about -1° C (therefore, +1° C relative to historical pre-industrial temperature). Mean sea level was 4–6 m higher than at present, following reductions of the Greenland ice sheet. Fossil reef proxies indicate sea level fluctuations of up to 10 m around the mean.
14 June 2012 in the journal, Geophysical Research Letters, the use of MIS5e as a model for contemporary climate change is contested saying, "Warm climate -- cold Arctic? The Eemian is a poor analogue for current climate change". Andrea Dutton's research uses MIS5e for contrast, not as a model of what will be. Dutton's work is one of the current drivers of people taking James Hensen's piece so much to heart.

We’ll be talking about how we can create an economy that works for all, with an excellent public school system, access to affordable higher education, and an innovation-based economy that creates good-paying jobs for hard-working Colorado families. While I’m in your neighborhood, I hope you can stop by one of our town halls and share your views on how we can build an economy that creates opportunity for everyone. Congressional Events: http://fcnl.org/... (scroll down to calendars). Ask your Senator and Representatives to publicize their constituent meet-&-greet here if you don't find her/him listed in the calendar!
Meet your Member of Congress
Have you ever met your member of Congress in person? Most people don’t know that there are dozens of opportunities to meet Members of Congress in person all year round by participating in town halls in your district/state and by attending the constituent coffees many senators host on a regular basis in Washington. You can use these events to meet with your members of Congress face-to-face.
Please note:
Constituent coffees and town halls are intended only for attendance by constituents of that Member of Congress.
If you're coming to DC, look for constituent coffees. If you're staying in your area, look for town halls where your member of Congress will be closer to home.
We are only listing the constituent coffees and town halls of which we are aware.
If you know of other events to meet with any Member of Congress, or see any mistakes, you can fill out this form.
Recesses are also shown on this calendar so that you know when most if not all Members of Congress are in DC vs. when they are in-district/in-state.
Schedules can change, so if you are planning on attending any of these events, we’d recommend you be in touch with your congressional office directly to confirm all relevant details.

Recesses (Purple)
1. Tonight phone 2 or 3 of your friends and get three or 4 different days and times that you and your little group can get together to visit the Congressional Member. Most Members begin feeling uncomfortable with a group larger than 5 or 6. Some are more timid and so having just 2 or 3 friends with you (group of 3 or 4 of you, the lobbyist/visitor) puts them more at ease. Use the data from the
site here: 1st thing tomorrow morning, phone your Member of Congress and ask for an in-office meeting in "The District" next week.
2. Ask for the appointment for the office visit but give your Congressional Member a choice of your top 2 appointment preferences. If neither are acceptable, then fall-back to offering your time preference for appointment #3. If you still don't have the appointment, ask for the staffer's suggestion of a good time and then counter-offer your appointment #4 preference.
3. Before you hang up ask when and where the next Town Hall will be. They don't really like to offer or publicize the T.H's. but if asked directly, the Member (staff) is usually really happy to say when the next one will be.
4. Congrats! You got your face-to-face! Here's the Ice-breaker for your little lobbying cadré (corps) to practice and maybe perform, One of you can play "Observer" taking notes & handing them to the next one of you who plays the role of "Brain" and passes scribbles onto the next, in the role "Mouth" talking for the group. Soon all of you will be skillful in all 3 roles and you'll be moving the visit at a good pace! Tell why Ice melt, sea level rise and superstorms are important to you ...
Global Warming at Halfway Point of Safety Limit, Research Shows (i.e., Half of climate safety level has gone) while the huge winner in this gameshow is Elbit Systems as you will find out if you just read a brief article here, here, here, here, here, here, and of course here wherein we find the story of an obscure Israeli transnational PMF/PMC that has been doing western hemisphere business in North America from the Canal Zone to the Canada line since the 1980's using battle-tested items straight from Palestine & Gaza brought to this continent.
Or see any of these to get a sense of the global reach our public funds have while there is no serious Congress-wide and Supreme Court involvement fighting climate change:
