Les Beastiables ("Les Bez"): Beasties say the darnedest things!
Today's Beastiable is Presidential Candidate John Kasicharoo. As Ohio's Governor, he did sign Medicaid expansion into law, and even gave a nice religious reason for it. However, on women's issues he is one of the worst. So while I saved him for one of the last beasties in the klown kar full of Republican candidates, I thought that what he has done to restrict abortion was beastly enough that he has earned his turn as one of Les Beastiables.
NOTE FOR NEW READERS: This series features a new Les Beastiables cartoon every Wednesday about 1:30-2:00 PM Eastern. We indulge in a little Franglish because the French are tres classy. But I digresse.
For serious source information, please join me below the orange squirming of beasties on the hot seat. Then you'll be able to "cleanse your palate" with a cute photo before you leave.
According to Mother Jones and several other sources, Governor Kasich has signed every abortion provision that reached his desk, a total of 16 anti-choice measures: Banning abortion after 20 weeks; prohibiting rape crisis counselors from referring women to abortion services (?!?!?!); decreasing funding for Planned Parenthood; requiring women to undergo ultrasounds to check for a fetal heartbeat; requiring doctors to describe the fetal heartbeat to the woman; requiring abortion providers to maintain transfer agreements with nearby hospitals while prohibiting public hospitals from entering into such agreements; and now he is considering a bill outlawing abortions of fetuses with Down syndrome (but of course, providing no additional financial, counseling, or medical services to parents of children with Down syndrome). But small government stays out of your private business, right?
"Why was it important to have a piece of legislation that literally imposed a gag rule on rape crisis counselors?" FitzGerald asked. "Do you have a question?" Kasich replied. After some coaxing from the Plain Dealer, Kasich said he was pro-life except in instances of rape or incest, but refused to address the provision's effect on rape victims.
You may find other sayings and doings by the same public figures equally as bad or worse compared to the beastliness I've highlighted. In other words, your cringeage may vary. Please feel free to discuss.
PS: John Kasich on Medicaid expansion:
Now, when you die and get to the meeting with St. Peter, he’s probably not going to ask you much about what you did about keeping government small. But he is going to ask you what you did for the poor. You better have a good answer.
As promised, just for fun is a photo of kangaroos.
