Poor Jeb! After
swinging and
missing on his previous attempts to respond forcefully to Donald Trump's attacks against him—which have clearly gotten under his skin—he took to the airways on Thursday morning for another at-bat. And what did he accomplish? Well, he probably infuriated the Republican base by waxing poetic about diversity ... and he undoubtedly showcased the problem with the GOP's
planned loyalty oath, which will have candidates pledging not to run third-party. Said Bush:
I think Donald Trump is trying to insult his way to the presidency ... he wants to tear us down, he doesn't believe in tolerance, he doesn't believe in the things that have created the greatness of this country ... he is a liberal ... has views that are more closely similar to those of Hillary Clinton.
And then, citing the pledge, George Stephanopoulos asked if Bush would support Trump if he got the nomination:
Yeah, I would. Of course. Of course I would.
Now granted, after a hard-fought, even ugly primary battle, the loser(s) will suck it up and support the winner. But they're not usually asked about it in the middle of a rant about their top opponent. Because after calling someone a scum-sucking piece of garbage, immediately saying "and of course I'd support him" might make you tend to look like an opportunistic, power-hungry jackass whose so-called principles don't mean anything and who doesn't give a crap about the country. You know, kind of how Jeb! looked in that exchange.
