It's looking like the Republican National Committee might have secured Donald Trump's promise not to make an independent run for president if he's denied the Republican nomination. He's got a Thursday afternoon press conference
scheduled, as well as a meeting with Reince Priebus, the Republican National Committee chairman. Sources
tell AP it's about a deal.
While neither side would publicly confirm late Wednesday that an agreement had been reached, Trump has hinted in recent days the GOP lobbying was beginning to work. [...]
In recent days, Trump has suggested he would soon decide whether to rule out a third-party bid.
"I think a lot of people are going to be very happy," he said Saturday in Nashville.
A "close associate" also tells Politico that
Trump will sign the pledge to signal that "he increasingly wants to show his campaign is real and not a stunt." Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, however, wouldn't confirm to Politico what his boss is doing, saying "I don't think you can 'expect' ANYTHING from Mr. Trump."
It's likely Trump feels confident enough in his lead, early as it is, that he'll sign whatever stupid piece of paper Republicans ask of him. But he really doesn't have anything to lose. The "pledge" the RNC is asking him to take is unenforceable. He could come up with whatever reason he wanted to screw the RNC and run. And would.
