Recently I spent a day walking around the Ohio State University campus to visit a couple sites on campus and another site just off-campus. Here are some of the critters I encountered.
The Daily Bucket is a regular series from the Backyard Science group. Here we talk about Mother Nature in all her glory, especially the parts that live nearby. So let us know (as close as you are comfortable) where you are and what's going on around you. What's the weather like? Seen any interesting plants, bugs or critters? Are there birds at your feeders? Deer, foxes or peahens in your yard? Seen any cool rocks or geological features? Post your observations and notes here. And photos. We like lots of photos. :)
Looks like this fellow just got his adult feathers
This looks a lot like the Chipping Sparrow I photo'd in Pittsburgh...?
I was only able to get one quick shot at long-range full zoom of this big fellow soaring along the Olentangy River
A Painted Turtle. The staggered scutes on his back mark him as the Midland Painted Turtle subspecies--in the Eastern Painted Turtle, the scutes form even rows across the back of the shell
I see lots of these swallowtails flying around, but this is one of the few who sit still long enough for a photo
Two in one day--I must have pleased the butterfly gods or something. ;)
Grasshopper. Not a Lubber, but pretty big
Another grasshopper, not as big, but with a nice reddish color
Milkweed pods
With Milkweed Bugs
The squirrels up north are lots fatter than our scrawny Florida squirrels. Probably because ours don't have to hibernate through the winter
And now it's your turn. What's flitting around your neck of the woods today? :)
