I could not believe my ears when I heard a Sunday-Show regular this morning, actually saying that "Bernie Sanders could be elected president of the United States."
I thought for a second, that a sneaker-wave of objectivity had swept through the spinrooms of the Inside Beltway Bubble, overnight.
Timemark: 1:45 -- ABC Transcript:
George Stephanopoulos: When Bernie Sanders was talking to Martha Raddatz last week, he said that this is not about being anti-Clinton -- it's about being pro-Bernie Sanders. Is he right about that?
Matthew Dowd:
The old rules no longer apply, the old rules you have to have all this organization in all of these states. You have to do this. And I think Bernie Sanders, to me the driving force of Bernie sanders is actually similar to what's going on in the republican side, which is authenticity. He's viewed as the most authentic person in that race, he doesn't dress up, he comes out and says his message. He's actually very thoughtful. It's opposite of Donald Trump's authenticity, authenticity without a lot of philosophy behind it. I don't underestimate Bernie Sanders. Bernie Sanders could easily win the democratic nomination. If it's Bernie Sanders and it's Donald Trump on the republican side, Bernie Sanders could be elected president of the United States.
Earlier in that same segment, there were also these sober and objective Sanders observations, from the resident progressive:
Timemark: 1:15 -- ABC Transcript:
George Stephanopoulos: Does Bernie Sanders really have what it takes to build a national campaign?
Katrina vanden Heuvel:
I think so. I think his -- you know, it's valid to be skeptical. But he has an electable agenda. He's building a team, his racial justice agenda is very powerful. He speaks to inequality in this country, the structural racism, but I think, you know, I think he's shown his strength. And he's been a skilled candidate.
In an earlier
ThisWeek segment [Timemark 2:00], Katrina vanden Heuvel also had some very critical things about the:
'Free publicity the Media is giving Donald Trump, with their wall-to-wall coverage of a Bully' on everything he says or does -- "to the exclusion of other candidates and their serious issues." She derided this "Media obsession with Trump" as a blatant disservice to the country, in their 'roles as Media Gatekeepers.'
It's not every Sunday Morning, you hear blunt Media-critiques like that. Bravo Kratrina! and Thank you Matthew.
