The Senate failed Thursday to invoke cloture on a resolution disapproving of the Iran nuclear agreement when 42 Democrats voted against it. As expected, Democratic Sens. Ben Cardin (MD), Joe Manchin (WV), Bob Menendez (NJ), and Chuck Schumer (NY), voted with Republicans.
That doesn't mean the voting is over, even though the agreement is in no danger from the Congress, says Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn.
"We're still working on what they will be, but there's going to be a number of additional votes next week," he said in response to a question about whether the Senate could take up a resolution approving the agreement.
That question comes about from the fact that the House,
now in the middle of work on three separate resolutions relating the agreement, including an approval resolution instead of a disapproval resolution because somehow this is supposed to
put Democrats on the spot and do something to derail the agreement? It's clearly a last-ditch move, as is any votes Senate Republicans try to force next week.
After today's vote in which 41 Democratic senators stood with President Obama, backing the agreement, anything else Republican leadership tries to do to block the agreement is just wasting time.
