Predictably, Donald Trump is polling ahead of all his GOP competitors in the latest
Quinnipiac poll of Iowa's GOP voters at 27 percent. Ben Carson trails him at 21 percent, and Ted Cruz is running third at 9 percent.
But Trump's No. 1 in another respect—giving just a wee glimpse of the trouble he would have in a general election.
Trump also tops another list as 25 percent of Iowa likely Republican Caucus participants say they "would definitely not support" him for the GOP nomination. Bush is next on this "no way" list with 23 percent, followed by New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie with 14 percent.
Of course, the problem for Jeb! is that only 6 percent of Iowa's GOP voters are eyeing him as their first choice. Which is exactly why his campaign had high hopes for New Hampshire, but that's
not looking so hot.
And what of Scott Walker, the erstwhile Iowa front-runner?
Today, Walker is at 3 percent, way behind in the pack.
Running No. 10, in fact. In Quinnipiac's last poll on July 1, Walker was running first at 18 percent, while Trump and Carson were tied for second at 10 percent each. My how fortunes have changed.
If Trump were to implode, Carson would be the clear beneficiary, with 30 percent moving to his column, while 11 percent choose Cruz, and 8 percent favor Jeb! as their runner-up. Carson, btw, also has the highest favorables of the entire GOP field.
