ABC is premiering its new program The Muppets tonight. The return to television for The Muppets will be a bold departure from the original, The Muppet Show which ran from 1975 to 1981. Rather than targeting kids with this iteration, ABC is putting an edgy spin on the program, hoping to tickle the nostalgia bone of the Gen Xers and Baby Boomers rather than charming their children.
The Muppets' return to primetime with a contemporary, documentary-style show. For the first time ever, a series will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, breakups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires.
The new show places the beloved Jim Henson characters in a mockumentary-style program something akin to
The Office. The premise has Kermit in the role of executive producer for a late-night show hosted by none other than that pig with the mostest, Miss Piggy. It is a behind the scenes look at the making of television sausage, while giving us warts-and-all insights into the characters we only thought we knew.
This has angered some Muppet purists who argue that it will tarnish a beloved slice of Americana, taking a sweet institution and turning it into an unnecessary and unwanted adult sitcom. I can see their point, although I don't terribly much share the concern.
Some may write a sternly written message to ABC giving them a piece of their mind. Most will likely grab for the remote and flip the channel to something more to their liking. Reasonable people doing reasonable things. But what if you are an unreasonable person, like, say, one of the finger-wagging scolds over at the American Family Association's One Million Moms. Then what would you do? Why, wage a shrieking holy war to get the ABC to send the "perverted" show back to the depths of hell, seeing to it that no one can watch it. That's what!
1MM suspects there are going to be a lot of shocked moms and dads when they discover that the family-friendly Muppets of the 1970s are no more. It appears that no subject is off limits. ABC's new Muppet Show, airing on Tuesday evenings at 8:00 pm ET/7:00 pm CT, is not what Jim Henson imagined and created. The new show is aimed at a mature, modern audience and addresses subjects not suitable for family viewing.
"It's sort of an adult Muppet show," Kermit the Frog said during a promotional video for the show. One ad read, "Finally, a network TV show with full frontal nudity." Technically, the advertisement is correct – seeing how Kermit doesn't wear pants.
The mature version of "The Muppets" will cover a range of topics from sex to drugs. Miss Piggy came out as a pro-choice feminist during an MSNBC interview. The puppet characters loved by kids in the 1970s and 1980s and beyond are now weighing in on abortion and promiscuity.
ABC hopes children watch the show and predict they would enjoy some of the humor, but 1MM would disagree. It is not the show it once was. ABC has ruined "The Muppets." How many parents want to explain the punchline of sexually charged jokes to young children?
Many parents unknowingly will let their children watch an episode only to find out its perverted nature too late, unless they are alerted ahead of time. 1MM and others need to get the word out to families to avoid this program at all costs. Please forward this to everyone you know!
Meanwhile, parents will have to explain to confused children that the program they once were allowed to watch is no longer a nice show. This would have been completely unnecessary if ABC had made the program follow its original family-friendly design.
Take Action
Please use the information we have provided to contact ABC (owned by Disney) and strongly encourage the network to drop all plans to air the program.
Frankly, I'm embarrassed for these people. To admit to the world that you have nothing better to do with your time than bang the Jesus gong over saltier modern Muppets demonstrates a pathetically empty life with far too much downtime. Renowned party pooper Franklin Graham has joined
the shrill chorus, lamenting that "their agenda is to promote sin to a younger and younger audience. I applaud the group One Million Moms for speaking out against this and urging parents to call on ABC to take it off the air. The Bible says, 'Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.' That goes for Kermit the Frog as well!"
Time to send that frog back to a pond filled with burning holy water! Tell that whore of a Jezzibel swine that zygote hogs are oinkers too! God made Adam and Eve, not Bert and Steve Ernie, you plushy devils! Exclaim your outrage until ears bleed and heads twist off shoulders just to get away from the noise! And don't forget the exclamation points!!!
Lord have mercy.
For the record, Kermit has never worn pants.
