If you've missed hearing John McCain weigh in on LGBT issues—he was oh so eloquent during the days of "don't ask, don't tell" repeal—things are looking up! It appears McCain is trying to make nicey nice with social conservatives again now that his
weak polling could draw a
primary challenger from the right. So on Friday McCain buddied up to conservative cause celebre, Kim Davis, who
received the "Cost of Discipleship Award" at the Values Voters Summit last weekend. McCain wanted a piece of the action and
gave Davis props for steadfastly ignoring the June Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage.
"I think she was right in that she can exercise the dictates of her conscience and everyone should respect that," McCain said. "I do not believe that therefore she should violate the law. She should have just said, 'I refuse to do it.' Just like Hobby Lobby case, which we won, because those people were allowed to exercise their religious beliefs by the United States Supreme Court."
A reporter asked McCain to clarify.
"You think that Kim Davis could say, 'I don’t want to perform this'?" the reporter asked.
"Yes," McCain responded.
We can expect more of this McCain, similar to the "
Complete The Danged Fence" McCain we saw in 2010.
