A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do you take low dose aspirin daily for health reasons?
Man, has there been a lot of news lately about aspirin. We've all known about taking a small dose of aspirin daily for cardiovascular health. By small amounts I mean 81 mgs in an enteric-coated tablet so as to avoid any stomach irritation for those who are prone to that.
There are so many studies out there regarding aspirin and CVD (cardiovascular disease). If you're between the ages of 50-70, taking low dose aspirin daily has a pretty significant effect, but you have to actually take it for years...like maybe as long as 10 years to get the full effect. The main reason it works is it helps reduce inflammation in your circulatory system. Inflamed arteries allow for LDL's (the bad cholesterol) to stick. Lessening inflammation decreases this from happening. Also, low dose aspirin lowers the risk of blood clot formation in the arteries which decreases the chances of a clot clogging an artery. Below are a couple links to some articles about this.

There are more and more studies about aspirin and cancer prevention. It's amazing how something that costs $0.02 per dose is so effective in lowering cancer risks of breast, colon, stomach, esophagus and throat cancers. It also increases survival rates after being treated for these cancers as in doubles the rate of 5 years survival. BUT a very positive result of taking low dose aspirin daily is that it reduces metastasis of several cancers by a lot. The first link below leads you to an article about this.
The second link below is for those of you who are interested in each type of cancer we get and what the current survival rates are. In other words, it's only for people who like detail. For men 43.31% will get cancer and 22.83% will die from cancer. For women 37.81% will get cancer and 19.26% will die from cancer.

Well, I'm always interested in anything medical. It's stunning to me that something so inexpensive and non-specific like aspirin has such huge effects on the two things people worry about more than anything, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Statistically, these two things cause death in humans more than anything else.
Heart disease (which includes Heart Disease, Stroke and other Cardiovascular Diseases) is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for people of most racial/ethnic groups in the United States, including African Americans, Hispanics and Whites. For Asian Americans or Pacific Islanders and American Indians or Alaska Natives, heart disease is second only to cancer.
Nearly one in four American men and one in five American women are projected to die from cancer. At least 30% of cancer deaths are caused by smoking.
Do you take aspirin daily? Are you tempted to now?
