Yep. Our country is going to hell in a Puritan's hand basket. But its not because of same-sex marriage, a woman's right to choose, or the teaching of evolution in schools, etc. It's because we're suffering from an empathy deficit. Boom. That simple.
Even our leaders lack this basic human quality that's critical for a well-functioning society. If presidential candidate Jeb! responds to the recent massacre as "stuff happens," we're in trouble. If Donald Trump has become the most popular GOP candidate by spewing vitriol, we're in trouble. If mean-mouthed, people like Ann Coulter climb the best-seller lists through contemptuous sparing and racial degradation, we're in trouble. Deep trouble. And, I'm just getting started.
This divisive, unfeeling, one-upmanship quality of character is pervasive, in the spotlight, even celebrated. Our children are witnessing our leaders behaving this shameful way, learning that this sub-human, dystopian behavior is normal. And what have culture warriors been worried children are learning? A thing or two about sex.
We don't need a culture war. We need a cultural evolution. An evolution of spirit infinitely more important than what other people do or don't do with their genitals.
