My method of collecting material for these diaries is based on the beachcomber technique: the happy haphazard gathering of curious and interesting things. At the end of the month I have a picture file brimming with images in no order whatsoever.
With over 160 images for August, sorting them was something of a challenge - that’s when even a mild dose of OCD comes in really handy!
In July I had enough material for two diaries. In August I quickly realized I had at least four diaries-worth and they will be:
That Was the Month Was – August on the Internet
That Was the Month That Was – August With the Candidates
That Was the Month Was – August Issues and Political Flotsam
That Was the Month Was – August Furbutts and Cute Critters
As each is published, I’ll add the link to the above list. At the end of each diary, you’ll find links to all previous diaries in the same subseries. For example, this diary will link to random internet snippets for the months of June and July while August with the Candidates will link to July with the Candidates.
Sitting comfortably? Good. Let's look back at what was happening in August 2015...
It was the month in which we farewelled Julian Bond and celebrated his
lifetime of passionate activism. What a beautiful and extraordinary man.
Sometimes it seems we haven't made any progress at all. Yet, when we look back, we can see how much our world has changed and how quickly. However, unlike a certain political party, we have no desire to go back and live in the past.
I wonder... did these "fresh air" children develop a fear of heights or did
they overcome their natural acrophobia, one of the most common fears?
The times they are a-changing lanes...
Only 5MB and it weighs 2,205 pounds? I'm glad we've moved on from this!
Now here's a different perspective on looking back at the past. These photo
pairs were posted on Twitter to suggest the possibility of past lives. Now I'm a reincarnationist and even I think this is pure whimsy! The present-day photos are of actors, people who change their appearance from film to film and fashion to fashion. Orlando Bloom (top right), for example, had long, straight blond hair as the elf Legolas in the Lord of the Ring films and a crew cut in Main Street, each a very different look from his Pirates of the Carribean character.
Do we miss what we've never known?
Don't miss the good times!
Always remember to be kind...
...and just be yourself.
That wasn't quite what I had in mind, Luke...
Let's ask the hippy, he looks laid-back with his peace sign tee-shirt.
Ah. Not quite what I had in mind either.
I'm looking for something far more positive and uplifting.
That's it! It's time to upgrade our value, everyone!
Now for some entertainment...
Maybe they're waiting for the crackers to arrive.
Ah, here's the crisps for the salt fiends among us!
All that saltiness has made me thirsty...
Not the flavor I had in mind...
Is there another flavor?
Now I know who would love bacon-flavored coke!
Time for dessert! Anyone have a knife handy?
Speaking of being useful - this is a great idea!
So, what shall we do today? Visit the zoo?
Stop by the local science fair.
What's happening on social media?
Morning Joe fell for this? Like "noted scholar" wasn't a clue?
Good advice on any day:
A lot of trolls, particularly the 'concern trolls' are like this:
When you run into drama princes and princesses in fear of
their life from ebola-carrying immigrant terrorists...
So what's on the news?
Any chance of some objective reporting... you know, without the spin?
Oh lookee here, a message from the media...
Any news without exaggeration?
Who's behind all this deflection and propaganda?
For the answer to that question, go to
Who is the Puppet-Master?
Unfortunately, Mark Twain was absolutely right about this which is why it's so hard to even get people to listen to facts. They've made up their mind and shut the door on changing it. Admitting they're wrong is psychologically too hard. They grew up with the experience of being punished for being wrong and will
do almost anything to avoid admitting wrongness as an adult.
It's emotional and irrational and very hard to change.
It's really good to see accurate reporting...
...and honesty is always appreciated.
Well, I didn't know that!
How about some shopping online? What bargains are in "BumTree" this month?
I don't have children so I'm really not in the market for a nanny squid.
What else is there?
Now that one is perfect for the lo- and no-info Republican base!
Anything a little bit special?
Not quite what I had in mind.
How about a bicycle... I'm thinking about getting some more exercise.
That's more like it!
What else is on offer?
Er... I'll pass on this one.
How about a second-hand vehicle?
Whoever parked that carpet should get a ticket! Disgraceful!
Let's spend some time with the children.
Kick back and have a lazy Sunday!
Is your rest often disturbed by the willful snoring of
an inconsiderate partner? Here's what you can do...
I've seen this happen time and time again:
And always remember... (◕‿◕)
