Pearl, at home
It's been an eventful week at Catnip Manor. The kittens and mama Pearl have been installed in a room of their own and seem to be very happy. More below the orange cat toy....
At first, the kittens hid from us whenever we entered the room:
But things are easing up a bit. I've been doing bookkeeping work in the room and they are slowly coming out. I even got to pet the one with the white muzzle! Well, mama likes to be petted -- and the kittens see this. So I have hopes that they will be more relaxed around people with a little more time.
ZenTrainer gave me a good tip...she suggested leaving a TV or radio on in the room so that the kittens become more used to human voices. So they have had some TV time.
In the meantime, I have been in touch with the Oregon Humane Society with regard to the Spay and Save program. They do such good work! Low cost spaying is available just about everywhere and is worth looking into if you are considering adopting. For example, people who receive public assistance of any kind in Oregon qualify for a price of $10 per cat. Pearl and her kittens have an appointment for October 30.
Another program for low income people in Portland, Oregon is The Pongo Fund. This charity, named after a beloved dog, was established to prevent the abandonment of pets due to lack of money to feed them. The mission statement of the Pongo Fund is:
The Pongo Fund is Oregon’s only full-time charity focused on fighting animal hunger. Because hungry people have hungry pets. We work tirelessly to reduce shelter populations and keep families together by providing emergency pet food assistance to anyone in honest need. Protecting beloved family pets from the suffering, starvation, surrender, abandonment or worse, when a lack of food, but not a lack of love, is their only enemy.
Melinda from the Humane Society also told me about
Vetco at Petco. Vetco comes to Petco stores on a rotating basis. We went to one of these clinics yesterday with Pearl and had her tested for the usual communicable diseases to which stray cats are vulnerable -- and good news! Her tests were negative. We can now let Pearl roam around the house and have a respite from the kittens. And a week before spaying, we can separate her from the kittens so that her milk dries up.
That's the news from Catnip Manor!
