A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Do You Like Crooners ?
I don't mean Norwegian currency, or those little cakes made with almond paste. I mean crooners as in singers. Here's Wikipedia's definition:
Crooner is an American epithet given to male singers of jazz standards, mostly from the Great American Songbook, either backed by a full orchestra, a big band or by a piano. Originally it was an ironic term denoting an emphatically sentimental, often emotional singing style made possible by the use of microphones. Some performers, such as Russ Colombo, did not accept the term: in an interview Frank Sinatra said that he did not consider himself or Bing Crosby "crooners".
Wikipedia
When I think of crooners, I do think of Bing Crosby, but the term goes back farther than him. Crooners came to be because of technology. Before microphones and electric amplification, singers had to sing really loud in order for their voices to be heard at the back of the hall. That's why opera singers are trained to sing from the diaphragm. After electricity they could sing softly and still be heard so they could put more nuance and expression in their singing. The article says Rudy Vallee was the first really popular crooner. Wait, I mean Rudy Vallée, rhymes with
purée apparently. I've been saying it wrong all my life. Anyway he was the first, starting around 1928. I still think Bing Crosby was a crooner. I don't care what Sinatra says.
Yeah, that's some crooning right there. Wikipedia also has a list of crooners, both living and deceased. You can check that out here ➡ List of Crooners I can't believe some of the singers they're calling crooners; Billy Joel, Elton John, Rod Stewart. WTF, no Axl Rose ? I don't think of Frank Sinatra as a crooner. He's more of a rat-packer. The rat-pack was all about attitude. We won the war, ain't we cool. They've got a smoke in their hands, talkin' about the booze and the broads. They pop their fingers a lot. I like Frank.
Bobby Darin is on the list. I don't think he's a crooner. He's not really a rat-packer either but he's got that same finger-poppin' sensibility. You hear that clearly on Mack the Knife, and this one:
Most everybody thinks Tony Bennett is a crooner. I don't think so at all. I think of him as a jazz singer, which is a cut above a crooner. If you listen to the notes he sings, the phrasing. It's jazz.
OK, alright. That's all I got for today. Now it's your turn. Once again I ask, has anybody got any cool links to share ? Is anyone planning a Meet-Up ? and ...

Paul Hogarth, Daily Kos Activism staff member is part of the cast.
The Piedmont Players present Gore Vidal’s The Best Man, a delicious, satirical political drama set at a nominating convention during a mythical 1960’s era election. A play about power, ambition, political secrets, and the race for the presidency, The Best Man takes place at the national convention where two candidates are vying for their party’s nomination for president. It’s an inside look at the dirt-digging, double-dealing, triple-crossing chicanery of presidential electioneering, and what could be more fun in a presidential campaign season than these theatrical fireworks?
