- Governor of Alaska says more oil drilling needed to cover costs of climate change:
Displaying a rather circular logic that defies common scientific understanding, Alaskan Gov. Bill Walker has said that the state must expand fossil fuel drilling in order to pay for the damage caused by climate change.
Walker, an independent, told BBC News that Alaska is facing "a significant fiscal challenge," due to falling oil prices and Shell's decision to pull out of drilling in the Chukchi Sea. Meanwhile, he noted, "We have villages that are washing away because of changes in the climate." To pay for adaptation and mitigation efforts, Walker said he wants to "urgently" drill in the protected lands of the Arctic National Wilderness Refuge (ANWR): "This isn't something we can put off for 10-20 years... We have to begin this process now—it's an absolute urgency for Alaska."

- Playboy to abandon its roots in March:
Playboy magazine will stop publishing pictures of fully nude women because the ubiquity of internet pornography has made such images “passé,” the company’s chief executive has revealed. [...]
The redesigned Playboy, 62 years after it was launched by [Hugh] Hefner, will still feature a Playmate of the Month and provocative pictures of women, but they will be rated PG-13 (a rating that cautions that material may be inappropriate for children under 13).
- Study finds fracking linked to premature births:
According to a recent study from Johns Hopkins, expectant mothers who live near fracking wells are at a increased risk of complications during pregnancy. Researchers analyzed data from 40 counties in Pennsylvania, a fracking-friendly state that had less than 100 fracking sites in 2006 and today has over 8,000. They found that living near active drilling sites correlated with a 40 percent increase in pre-term birth and a 30 percent increase in “high-risk” pregnancy, which means complications like high blood pressure or excessive weight gain.
- Christie says he would shoot down Russian planes over Syria. The New Jersey governor, now flailing away as his presidential campaign is being shot down by the polls, says U.S. should threaten Russia over its attacks in Syria:
“My first phone call would be to Vladimir, and I’d say, ‘Listen, we’re enforcing this no-fly zone,'” Mr. Christie said on MSNBC. “And I mean we’re enforcing it against anyone, including you. So don’t try me. Don’t try me. Because I’ll do it.”
Mr. Christie went on to say that Mr. Putin was “punching above his weight” and called Mr. Obama “this weakling in the White House.”

- Dakota scholar says historic paintings in renovated Minnesota state capitol building depict Indians inaccurately:
The paintings sometimes depicted Indians as a “faceless menace,” Westerman said, and they were often inaccurate with respect to Dakota dress and other cultural characteristics.
“As a Dakota person coming to the State Capitol and viewing this art, I have a very different reaction than other people who have no connection to it. And I find it problematic in terms of how American Indian people are depicted in the State Capitol,” she said in an interview after the presentation.
