Received this e-mail today from former Governor Ted Strickland's (D. OH) U.S. Senate campaign:
I was the first in my family to go to college, so I understand the power of higher education to transform lives -- but I also understand the financial barriers many students face. So as governor, I froze tuition costs and made college free for veterans. And I’ll continue fighting to make college more affordable for Ohio students as senator.
When Republicans like Rob Portman make it harder for current students to afford college, it’s our job to stand up and fight back. I’ve united with a group of fellow Democrats to urge Congress to renew the Perkins Loan program and help make higher education more affordable.

The Perkins Federal Student Loan program is the oldest federal loan program in the country established to provide financial aid for college students with exceptional financial need. My opponent, Rob Portman, proposed ending the Perkins Loan program when he was budget director under President George W. Bush, and on September 30, his GOP friends in Congress let the Perkins Loan program expire. Now we need to tell Congress to renew this critical program before it’s too late.

Perkins loans have helped more than 30 million students attend college and given them a fair shot at the success that can come with higher education. That’s why I’ve joined with Senate Democrats to protect the Perkins Federal Student Loan program. Will you join us to help give all students a shot at success?
Thanks,
Ted
