A quick look at some odd seasonal occurrences, after the jump .......
But first: Top Comments appears nightly, as a round-up of the best comments on Daily Kos. Surely ... you come across comments daily that are perceptive, apropos and .. well, perhaps even humorous. But they are more meaningful if they're well-known ... which is where you come in (especially in diaries/stories receiving little attention).
Send your nominations to TopComments at gmail dot com by 9:30 PM Eastern Time nightly, or by our KosMail message board. Please indicate (a) why you liked the comment, and (b) your Dkos user name (to properly credit you) as well as a link to the comment itself.
I am very much a seasonal person, even to the point of noting unusual signs of the seasons. some examples:
You know it's the beginning of summertime when, unless you live in an unusually dry environment: the humidity causes copier paper to curl-up in offices across the country.
Also, when gardens start to sprout ... when opening your back door, beware of the
Zucchini dump - with National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day is apparently celebrated(?) on August 8 each year.
Each September, the president emeritus of Middlebury College in Vermont, Olin Robison ..
- who served as a lower-level staffer in the LBJ administration before entering academe - often spoke of what the beginning of September meant to him:
I have long thought that Labor Day is the real New Year in American culture. It is the time when, psychologically at least, everything changes. Summer and vacations are over. It is time to get back to work. And, of course, it is also time for the young to go back to school.
Once October rolls around: there are only a few days for your local disk jockey to remind you:
Also this month: to me, it's neither Wabbit Season nor Duck Season ........
Instead, it's ... Catalog Season .... as the holiday shopping catalogs start arriving in droves.
On the third Thursday of November, a wine whose taste I can take-or-leave ... makes its annual appearance. Still, the tradition of Beaujolais Nouveau is something that is hard to ignore.
Are there any quirky, not widely celebrated change-of-season observations that you have?
One obvious closer to this essay is the 1968 song Time of the Season written by keyboardist Rod Argent of The Zombies.
Just this past weekend, a tribute concert in London was held for Jack Bruce (almost exactly a year after his death) that also served as a benefit to his favorite charity. His daughter Natascha (stage name Aruba Red) sings a classic tune We're Going Wrong from my favorite musician ... with his old Cream bandmate Ginger Baker on drums and Ian Anderson (of Jethro Tull) on flute.

(NOTE: Any missing images in the Quilt were removed because (a) they were from an unapproved source that somehow snuck through in the comments, or (b) it was an image from the DailyKos Image Library which didn't have permissions set to allow others to use it.)
