A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

How's Your Boogaloo ?
Yes my friends, that is the question of the day for this the First Tuesday of November, Election Day, 2015. The question comes down to us from the immortal Wolfman Jack1 who would often ask it of his listeners. Many will remember the Wolfman from his appearance in the 1973 hit film American Graffiti.2 Others may remember him from his radio broadcasts. I remember the Wolfman from his radio show on XERB,3 The Big X Over Los Angeles. Although its target audience was Los Angeles and the greater Southern California megalopolis the station was not located in L.A. Rather, it was broadcast from Rosarito Beach, Baja California4. The Big X was a "border blaster." FCC rules regarding allowable power did not exist in Mexico so stations could broadcast at much higher power levels than in the U.S. Robert Weston Smith developed his Wolfman character while working at XERF across the river from Del Rio, Texas. That station was also a border blaster, said the Wolfman, "We had the most powerful signal in North America. Birds dropped dead when they flew too close to the tower. A car driving from New York to L.A. would never lose the station."
Whence the "Wolfman" moniker ? Certainly not from a Lon Chaney movie. No, Smith took it from a blues singer named Howlin' Wolf5 along with that artist's gravelly vocal style, as in this classic tune:
What about the subject of this morning's question, the Boogaloo ? I'm not sure what, exactly, a Boogaloo is but I imagine the word came from the term boogie, which is a type of blues. A boogie does not follow the I-IV-V chord structure of a standard 12-bar blues. It is just a single guitar figure played over and over again with the vocals, or perhaps a harmonica, providing the necessary variety. The song above is an example. Howlin' Wolf and John Lee Hooker6 were both known for their boogies. Eventually the term boogie came to be used a slang for go or leave as in, "I can't stay, I gotta' boogie." Still later it was abbreviated to simply book. Some of you may remember.
OK that's all I got for today. What's new in CUA-landia, anyone have an interesting link, are any new Meet-Ups in the works and ...
