Someone may get a flaming bag of dog poo next Halloween.
Presidio, Texas (population 4,400) is near the border with Mexico. It is not uncommon for people to travel back and forth to Mexico from Presidio, including Halloween night when many families often cross the border on Halloween for trick-or-treating with their children. This year many of the parents were shocked to see a sign hanging
outside the home of one border patrol employee:
Only American families will receive candy.
How can the children prove they're American? At least one outraged community member is reporting he was
asking the children to speak English before getting candy.
The man at the home was apparently dressed as Uncle Sam, although some reported he was dressed as Donald Trump. Residents of Presidio are upset:
"I believe a lot of kids do come over from the side for free candy and stuff like that, it's just a part of the way we grew up,” says Chevo Terrazas. “I think if it was a joke it would have been highlighted as a joke, it really didn't seem like it.”
While the sign is taken down now, many say it's already sparked anger throughout the community and say they want to see some sort of action taken.
"It makes you think how is he gonna treat people that he gets in the border," says Rey.
The agency hasn't released any details on how the employee was
dealt with internally:
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued a statement Wednesday saying the sign, which was written in Spanish, "does not reflect the opinion of this agency."
The agency says it respects all people regardless of their culture, nationality or country of origin.
Customs officials declined to release details about the worker or possible discipline over the sign, which was posted Saturday in Presidio, a town of 4,400 people near the Mexican border.
