A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us at Daily Kos every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

Remember Advice Columns?
The other day Denver Dad sent us a newspaper column about the Broncos' coaching woes featuring the headline: Can This Marriage Be Saved? pNut had never heard of this feature, apparently having grown up with a dearth of 1960's women's magazines dispensing indispensable homemaking advice. This particular advice column always followed the same three part formula: The aggrieved party (usually the woman) first provides the list of complaints, a brief history of the couple's courtship and a recap of family background. The misunderstood husband tells his side of the story, and the therapist smooths everything over in the end by convincing the defective party in the marriage (usually the woman) to change their ways.
As I recall it
MaryPat's Story:
MaryPat is a vivacious brunette with bouncing curls and a quick though insincere smile. Her heavy make-up barely conceals the purplish-yellow smudge below her left eye.
MaryPat: RickyDick is not the man I married. When we were dating all he wanted was to get married and start a family, but now that we have kids he's never around, and when he is home he's always drinking beer or throwing things at me. I'm at my wit's end!
MaryPat then recalls how the two met attending junior college in the midwest, where MaryPat studied typing and RickyDick majored in advanced flange manufacture. After the birth of their first child Elmo they moved to a tract house in a southern California suburb where MaryPat gave up her ambitions to be a full-time homemaker and raise their 2.5 children.
MaryPat: My parents never fought once in their entire marriage, and though they weren't physically demonstrative they always spoke in little endearments like "Pass the butter, please." I always assumed my marriage would be just as idyllic.
When RickyDick and I were first married we could talk all night long about such a wide range of subjects, like who makes the best flanges in the world. But after Elmo came along RickyDick began to stop after work for a beer with the guys 'to discuss flange futures' and soon I was left alone with a shrieking baby all the time. Then I got pregnant again with LucyLoo and Ricky's occasional night out with the boys became every night, and when I asked RickyDick what happened to our savings account and he.....well, he threatened me with a butterchurn paddle.
I tried even harder to be a good wife, and even washed his underwear and socks by hand every night, but when I gave birth to our half-child 9 months later I'd had enough. He drinks up all our money and just the other night threw his tuba at me. Unless you can talk some sense into him I'm taking the kids and going back to East Wind Indiana to live with my parents and finally become a self-sufficient adult.
Why would anyone want to save this marriage?
RickyDick Responds:
RickyDick is a squat toad of a man with a bullet-shaped head and fists (which he keeps clenched at his sides during the interview) the size of stewing hens. He speaks in a flat monotone.
RickyDick: MaryPat is just plain psycho. The other day I barely got inside the door, I mean I didn't even have time to grab a beer, before she was all up in my grill wanting to know (speaks in a mocking falsetto) 'how my day was.' Her demands just never end. I work hard at the Flange Factory providing for her so that she can sit around churning butter all day. And on top of everything else she expects me to remember all these details about the kids, like their names and birthdays.
When we first got married she was hot-to-trot but now I can't interest her in 'starting a family' anymore. That's what she calls 'doing it.' My mom had 16 kids and never complained once, but MaryPat seems to think 2.5 kids are a huge load. Am I supposed to go the rest of my life without getting laid? I'm seriously thinking about trading her in for a younger model that doesn't run her mouth non-stop. Can't a man get a little peace in the evenings?
Again: Why would anyone want to save this marriage?
The Therapist's Notes:
We made it clear to RickyDick that he needed to address his temper. Indeed, after one session of cognitive readjustment RickyDick said he now understood why he shouldn't belt MaryPat in the face, not even when she's being especially annoying. He demonstrated his willingness to show more interest in his family by allowing the therapist's clerk to present him with a desk calendar with his wife and children's birthdays circled in red. Now it is simply up to MaryPat to give RickyDick credit for his efforts to meet her halfway.
Unfortunately, MaryPat was resistant to taking responsibility for her role in the couple's problems. MaryPat needs to learn to stop talking so much and create a more tranquil and comfortable home, especially when RickyDick has spent the evening out with the boys. MaryPat lacked empathy as to why men need some peace and quiet at the end of a long day and needs to at least give her husband a beer or a blow-job before she hectors him with trivia or demands an account of his every move. MaryPat was reminded that she can't be expected to understand the intricacies of flangeing and should leave such things to men.
Oh god, don't tell me they actually "saved" this?
Six Months Later:
MaryPat has matured. She flushed her copy of The Feminine Mystique and has taken up butter sculpting. Learning to keep her mouth shut and her man satisfied have assured the survival of her marriage.
