Installed Juicy Studio Accessibility Toolbar (Firefox add-on) from W3C’s wiki on Accessibility testing — opened DK, and ran Luminosity Colour Contrast Ratio Analyser. DK5 shows 53 failures:
May or may not have much to do with eye strain problems on DK5. More below sacrificial squiggle.
Commercial websites are being successfully sued for lack of accessibility. Since 2010, the DOJ has been considering adding “Public Accommodation Website Regulations” to Title III of the ADA. Currently, that update’s delayed until 2016:
…most insiders believe [the delay] has to do with the difficulty of appropriately quantifying the costs and benefits of complying with any promulgated regulations...
Until then, there’s W3C’s Involving Users in Evaluating Web Accessibility & Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0:
Despite the lack of formal regulations, companies seeking to assess the accessibility of their websites do have guidelines to look to that have obtained near-universal support… Indeed, this sentiment was expressly echoed by DOJ during a presentation last month at the National ADA Symposium in Atlanta, Georgia.
BTW, I think DK5 looks great. However, during breaking news I’ll probably stick with Twitter — my notebook can’t handle rebooting DK liveblogs.
