Fast food workers in 270 cities across the country plan to strike and protest on Tuesday as they continue to fight for $15 an hour pay and the right to a union. The Tuesday protests also make clear that the workers have their eye on the 2016 elections. Workers will protest outside the Republican presidential debate in Milwaukee and:
Terrence Wise, 36, of Kansas City, Mo., earns $8 an hour at jobs at McDonald's and Burger King and has participated in earlier protests. He says he has never voted because, "I truly thought my vote wouldn't matter much," and he was just "trying to make it to the next day."
But noting that the low-paid worker demonstrations have led to significant advances, he plans to vote for the first time next year. "I'm seeing I can make a change," he says.
Wise introduced President Obama at the White House Worker Voice Summit last month, prompting Obama to “offer at the outset the observation that Terrence could run for something.” But Wise is not a candidate, he’s part of a movement, and it’s a movement that will be in the streets on Tuesday.
