It seems that a fundamentalist Christian woman enrolled her children in a theater class, and subsequently found out that the teacher was gay. I mean who would ever think that a drama teacher would turn out to be gay. Next thing you know, we’ll find out that some men who teach sports classes are gay. They do? Okay, nevermind. Anyway, the mother sent the gay teacher a text indicating that she was removing her kids from his class because he is — gasp — homosexual. And she couldn’t possible have her kids exposed to THAT kind of “lifestyle.” His response is below.
Michael Neri, a theater producer in Birmingham, England, also runs Talking Props, a drama school for kids. (That's him in the center of the circle of students in the photo above.) If the testimonials on the school's website are true, Michael is an "amazing teacher" who directs the kids into producing a "fantastic show." Last year they put on High School Musical. This year they're rehearsing for Happy Days. Parents and students alike talk about how much confidence Michael instills in these young thespians.
But Michael was recently blindsided by a parent who texted him to say she was removing her kids from his class. The parent even mentions Michael's admirable reputation as a drama teacher, but in her Christian thought process, whether or not his class could be a positive experience for her kids was not as important to her as the discovery that Michael is gay.

I particularly like the last sentence — “Unfortunately deposits are non refundable but don’t worry. Your deposit has been donated to Stonewall, an LGBT charity.”
Now, on to the tops.

From leu2500: From Denise Oliver Velez’s diary, We Went to Howard -- Not Harvard, this comment by addisnana. The text is below.
Denise’s posts replace books at book club.
My D-I-L and her neighbors have a book club which is part social and part educational. I was having coffe with some of the members/neighbors who were trying to figure out how to become more informed about black history. I pulled up a post of yours and suggested they read your pieces and the links and use that as a discussion prompter. Since they all work and have young kids this seemed more manageable than trying to read and discuss a whole book. For what it’s worth, your excellent pieces are spreading through the book club culture and are much appreciated. Spouses, not wanting to be less informed are also reading you. These are mostly but not all Democrats. They would not appear here to thank you so I am. You are making waves in a way you probably never imagined. Thanks!
From lotac: In Egberto Willies' diary "Chuck Todd confronts Donald Trump on air about his lies", Radiowalla says that Al Franken should update his book "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them", and bleeding blue counters with the suggestion for a multi-volume boxed set.
Al Franken needs to add a Trump chapter to his “Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them.”
A chapter? Franken will need to produce a multi-volume boxed set based on the 2016 gop presidential candidate roster alone.
From Tamar: Passionate comment by Diogenes2008 about how important it is not just for ourselves but also for others that we don't sit out elections. It’s found in By DowneastDem’s diary, Hillary Clinton At Wellesley College.
I hope you don’t mind if I leave a rather off-topic comment way down here, but it’s something that has been bothering me lately.
I’ve seen people saying that we should “stop using fear” as a reason to vote for Clinton in the general election, assuming she wins the primaries.
Fear? Really?
I’m a Clinton supporter, but I would vote for Sanders in the general should he be the candidate. But not out of fear.
It would be out of a sense of compassion.
Whether I would survive a GOP presidency is debatable. And I’m only one person.
But many MANY people would not survive, or end up in dire straits if a Republican took the White House.
Is it stupid of me to want others to survive? Is it stupid of me to care about those I’ve never met? I would hope not. I always believed that was the essence of being a liberal, or Democrat, or progressive. Caring for everyone, not just a few. Looking outward with compassion, not inward with fear.
Call it whatever you wish. Vote however you please.
For me, elections are hugely important, and I will not sit home ever. EVER EVER EVER.
Too many lives hang in the balance, so I will let compassion be my guide.
Fear doesn’t even enter the equation.
