It’s December! Cue the countdown to Christmas, be it your personal religious and/or cultural holiday, that of your neighbors, or the holiday according to Faux the rest of us are busy waging war against. Every year I try to do a seasonal series around now, but with my leaves as-yet-unraked, a nice rain falling outside, and my dinner STILL utilized leftover turkey, I want to consider All The Holidays. Or more specifically… what’s your favorite holiday?
Grab some eggnog (did you know you can freeze eggnog, thaw it and it tastes just like fresh eggnog?!) and follow me below the fold over the river and through the message by our sponsor, then hop across the little grey page divider…

I’ve got two holidays that fall into the category Favorite, loosely based on warm and cold seasons (I’ve lived my entire life in the Northeast, I’m hardwired to think in seasons, bear with me those of you in less changeable climates!). My cool weather choice is Thanksgiving, while my warm weather favorite is July 4th.
Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite of the holidays between Labor Day and Memorial Day. Yes, even more than Christmas. Why, you might wonder? Simple- while the meal and attendees might be identical, Christmas as celebrated culturally in the United States revolves around presents. What are you giving, and what are you getting. Thanksgiving for me revolves primarily around family. I appreciate the time to gather and spend the day cooking, enjoying a special meal and cleaning up together without wondering when we’ll open presents.
Yes, I know it’s not a day of celebration for many and Casa Brillig makes it a point to remind ourselves that the day came at great cost for so many people. I hope that what that day means to me- family, tradition, opening our table to anyone who might need a place- matters.
And then there’s my warm weather favorite, July 4th. We don’t have a traditional way to spend the day other than me reading the Declaration of Independence and without fail being awed by the power in words stating to the entire world “We are being oppressed and will no longer stand for it.” What makes it so good is simple-fireworks. Seriously, gunpowder, which in guns causes such death and violence in the world, ALSO makes the night skies light up in colors when used in fireworks. And I’ll take “Ooh, Ahh, Pretty!!” over “OMG another shooting!” any day.
What are your favorite holiday(s) and why? Muse on that while reading over what you really come here for, the Three Tops. Thanks to the wonders of finally figuring out DK5, my favorite collaborator BeninSC has Top Comments, Mojo and Pictures!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
