I know its really fun to post diaries attacking/praising our choices for POTUS in the upcoming primaries, but we need to keep our eyes on the “big picture.” Neither of the front-runner Democrats are going to get anything done without a Congress (at least a Senate) filled with a majority of Democrats.
Want to #fightfor15 or a pass $12 minimum wage? We’ll be lucky to get $9 if we don’t pay attention to downballot races.
In order to win downballot races, we need people to run downballot.
Candidate filing in North Carolina closes in 6 days. If nothing changes, we give the GOP 88 free wins.
I just pulled down the latest candidate list from the NC Board of Elections. Unfortunately, the number of people running hasn’t changed much since last week.
A major positive change from last time, we now have a Democratic challenger in the 11th Congressional District!
Tom Hill is running for the 11th. This isn’t his first time running for the seat. I didn’t find a website for his campaign, but like the rest of us, he has a Facebook page.

I’m hoping there are more candidates that are not yet listed and that we aren’t in fact giving away nearly 90 elections next week. And that’s just for Congress and the state legislature! I’m not even looking at the judges, commissioners, or other races up for grabs.
If you live in NC and know anyone even remotely qualified from any of these districts, now’s the time to call them up and nudge them to file. My local districts are safe D seats with entrenched incumbents, but I’ll be making calls for the rural districts where I used to live.
What is the NCDP doing to make sure we have candidates? I intend to call the state party headquarters at 919-821-2777 and find out. I might also send an email to our Chair, Patsy Keever via PatsyKeever@ncdp.org.
Don’t live in NC? Your state’s deadlines may be fast approaching. Let’s make sure we have Democrats running in as many districts as possible nation-wide.
Any opposition is better than nothing.
