His name is Abu Azrael, and he is said to be the most feared warrior in the battle against ISIL. He has many nicknames, among them "Daesh killer," "Rambo," and "Father of the Archangel of Death."
In addition to the usual military weapons, Azrael often carries a medieval battle-axe into combat, much like the Viking berserkers. ISIS insurgents reportedly regard Abu Azrael with a sense of near-supernatural dread, and his legendary bravery in battle has made him an international hero. His popular personal catchphrase, "Illa Tahin" (i.e., "nothing but flour") is now showing up on tee-shirts throughout the Middle East, the implication being that ISIL will be ground to dust.
Azrael is a commander of the Iranian-backed Kata'ib al-Imam Alian, a Shi’a militia group that has inflicted some of the most devastating casualties on the forces of ISIL. He is also a family man with five young children. For him, the war is personal. Everything is at stake. Every day, Iranian-backed fighters like Azrael are fighting and dying in a brutal conflict against the most savage foe the modern world has ever seen.
So, before we attack the Iranians, we ought to at least take a moment to thank them for having our backs.
