Here we go again. Chris Christie's Super PAC, America Leads, is out with this web ad called "Mary Pat," in which the governor tells his already debunked story about being "named U.S. Attorney on September 10." Which is a big ol' lie.
On September 10, Christie got the letter from the Bush administration telling him he was under consideration, and that he would be undergoing a background check. He was actually nominated in December and didn't get the confirmation and start the job until January, 2002. Clearly the background check didn't delve too deeply into checking to see if the things he says in public are actually true.
Of course, that's not the only thing he regularly lies about in trying to be this cycle's Rudy Giuliani (noun, verb, 9/11). Among his other overblown claims are that he is the only candidate who filed applications with and "has gone before" the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. Which U.S. Attorneys don't do. They don't argue at the FISC. Nor do they file applications at FISC. Only the Office of Intelligence at the Justice Department does that.
The personal part of this story is undoubtedly true, that he was frantic knowing his wife was at the World Trade Center when the planes hit and didn't hear from her for hours on that day. But that he cynically uses that deeply personal moment and twists it into making himself some kind of national security superhero speaks volumes about his character. In a clown car full of sociopaths and narcissists and misanthropes, Christie more than holds his own.
