Friends and frenemies,
Many skeptics on these pages have asked Sanders supporters “Where’s this political revolution?” Many people have wondered how Bernie will get anything done with our intransigent congress.
Guess what? The revolution is underway and I would like to introduce you to some congressional candidates around the country, the new Sanders Democrats.
AGuyFromCarolina wrote a diary the other day, Here’s Bernie’s Revolution: Introducing “Sanders Democrats” which is a diary I’ve been meaning to write myself, for quite some time! I’m hoping that there’s not so much overlap and that this diary contains some new information. AGuyFromCarolina did mention John Fetterman, who is running for a Senate Seat in Pennsylvania. He’s got a fabulous webpage you can visit right here.
I think I have a few more new Democrats to introduce to you! Just today, I noticed on my Twitter feed that Lucy Flores, a former Assemblywoman and congressional hopeful in Nevada’s 4th CD, currently held by a moderate Republican. It’s 4-way race and it will be tight for Lucy, but if she can get her fundraising going, she definitely stands a chance to ride Bernie’s coattails into a congressional seat. You can visit her page here, where you can read more about her, and donate to her campaign.
All I learned about Lucy, I learned today and I have to say, I like what I’ve read so far. On her page, for example, you can read a bit of her background . What moxie she has; once a high-school drop-out, she overcame her difficult beginnings, received her law degree, became an assemblywoman and now is a contender for a congressional seat. If you can spare the cash, send a couple bucks her way! Here’s a little bit about Lucy.
Lucy Flores is running for Congress to help more people get the opportunities they need to get ahead in this economy.
Lucy doesn’t have the background of a typical politician, but she has personally experienced the impact an investment in people can have on their future. It is what motivates her to give back to our community.
Lucy grew up in a challenging environment, and like too many kids in Nevada, she fell through the cracks. She dropped out of high school, but through hard work and the investment of people who cared for and believed in her, she got her GED, enrolled in community college, and earned her bachelor’s degree. Lucy eventually received her law degree at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and was recognized with multiple awards for her outstanding accomplishments in the community.
We all who Tim Canova is by now. He’s already diaried about his congressional run challenging none-other-than Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s seat in Florida, and I’m pretty sure that inspired a lot of donations to his campaign from far and wide, even from here in Seattle! In case you missed it, here’s a link to his campaign website.
Then there’s Gary Kroeger, who is currently running for a congressional seat in Iowa’s 1st District, which is currently held by Republican Rob Blum. I didn’t even know he, like Al Franken, is an SNL alum. I’m not sure if he posted a diary here, I’m not that good at searching, I did type his name in the search bar, but didn’t see anything pertaining to him or his congressional bid.
Love this guy, I mostly “know” him from Twitter — he is extremely enthusiastic about the new Sanders Democrats and often tweets with the hashtag: #GotBeriesBack Who else?
I was born and raised in Waterloo and Cedar Falls, where my father worked as an engineer for John Deere and my mother was a special education teacher in the public schools. My parents were members of a proud middle class who instilled their three sons with the values of hard work, the importance of a good education and a moral obligation to support equal rights and compassion for all. With a scholarship, affordable loans and an early morning job washing dishes, I was fortunate to attend and graduate from Northwestern University. For the next twenty years, I forged a career in the entertainment industry, which took me from Chicago to New York and, finally, Los Angeles.
Progressive US Senate hopeful, Tom Fiegen, also out of Iowa, says that he is running:
To restore and protect working Iowans from billionaire special interests, overturn Citizens United and stand with Bernie Sanders, before and after the election. I am running to protect and expand the grown-local farm movement; clean up Iowa water and stop the excessive use of dangerous chemicals in agriculture.
Also, check out his issues page, which include:
- The Obscenity of Student Debt
- Social Security
- Wall Street Reform, Taxes and Restrictions
- Prescription Drug Cost Reform
- Overturn Citizens United
Future Senator Fiegen is truly singing my song!
Reginald Bolding is running for reelection in the Arizona’s 27th District. I really don’t much about him. My mom is a retiree living in Arizona (even retired Hispanic ladies are all in for Bernie!), but I’m not sure what district she’s in, and anyway, we don’t talk politics too much. Last time we did, she just said “Oh, quit your worrying, Bernie Sanders is going to win!” I love my mom, but I digress.
The Arizona Republic named Representative Bolding one of "14 Individuals Poised to Change Arizona".
You can log on to Twitter and check out his Tweet stream. Representative Bolding has a Masters in Education and is currently doctoral candidate at the University of Arizona.
Did I mention that each of these candidates have endorsed Bernie Sanders?
Oh yes.
