GOP Rep. Graham Hunt is obsessed with a new state regulation allowing transgender people to use the public restroom consistent with their gender identity. But instead of getting in a twit about where people pee, perhaps Hunt should just concentrate on his own issues. Seems he posted a picture glorifying his service in the Middle East of two soldiers huddled together in combat garb, a photoshopped American flag draped behind them with "Knows The Sacrifice" added for dramatic effect. Hunt recalled the moment on his Facebook page:
“This picture of me was taken after a mortar attack in 2005,” the post said. “Background has been modified, but I think combat camera captured the moment pretty well. I surely have not forgotten that moment.”
And just as surely, it would be hard to forget something that never happened. Neither soldier was Hunt. Turns out it was a 2003 Associated Press photo of two other service members near Baghdad. Okay, so this guy's no genius—like an AP photo would just slip through the cracks. But his fanciful recollections don't seem to stop there, reports Jim Brunner:
Hunt has described himself as having been “wounded in combat” but grows vague when asked for details. He said he was knocked down by explosions but cannot remember where. He also says he cannot remember the names of units he deployed with to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Late last month, after being interviewed by The Seattle Times, Hunt altered several details about his military service on his online biographies.
He deleted references to the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal — awards a military personnel office says do not appear on his service record.
Also removed was a reference to Hunt being a “combat veteran” of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Yeah, this is definitely the type of straight shooter we want telling everybody else what they should and shouldn't be doing. Oh, did we mention—Hunt is the state chair for Ted Cruz's campaign. Seems like a delusions-of-grandeur match made in heaven.
