Marco Rubio, who has said he opposes abortion even in cases of rape or incest, is trying to cast Hillary Clinton as the extremist on the issue. That presents a challenge for him, since the vast majority of Americans support legal abortion in cases of rape and incest, while it’s a lot harder to make Clinton’s views look extreme. Rubio found his answer, though: lying.
"Hillary Clinton is an extremist on this issue," the Florida Republican said Thursday in New Hampshire. "She believes there should be no such thing as an illegal abortion -- even on the due date."
What do you even say to a blatant, desperate lie like that? Because, wow, no. That’s just not true. I’m not sure where you would find anyone who holds that position, and it’s sure as hell not Hillary Clinton. What’s next? That Clinton would abort a child at its fifth birthday party?
Clinton has been an outspoken defender of Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion to the point of the viability of the fetus (which is, newsflash, rather before the due date), and she has argued for expanded access to abortion and emergency contraception for low-income women and women in the military. But no such thing as an illegal abortion? If that’s not a flatly invented claim, it’s the kind of twisted misrepresentation of words taken wildly out of context that belongs in the political BS record books.
If Marco Rubio thinks that, to win, he needs people to believe that Hillary Clinton believes in abortion up to the due date … what lie wouldn’t he be willing to tell about her positions?
