My dad had a pair of brown pants that he wore for nearly 40 years. They were so threadbare from washing and drying that they had a shine to them. Despite my efforts and buying him several replacements, he continued to wear them. They were in his closet the day he died. They were his favorite pants, he said, so comfortable, so much like an old friend that he never parted with them.
Unlike him with only a couple of favorite things, those of us with clutter over our homes (I confess!) know all too well that it’s hard to part with so many things because they’re our favorites or they hold memories….

One of the hardest jobs around the house is getting rid of clutter. Deciding what goes and what stays. It’s usually nice when you think of someone else enjoying the item if you donate it, but too often our thoughts go to “I might wear that someday” or “I might need that someday”. Instead, we should focus on thoughts of needing to get rid of things because you just ran out of room for everything you have.
I’m not talking about shedding your favorite things, but there shouldn’t be a houseful of favorite things. Or piles of things, closets you fear to open, or a basement/attic you can barely walk through.
As we plan for spring (the groundhog HAS spoken) and the spring cleaning we’ll do once we open up our windows, it might be time to consider what our favorite things really are and prepare to give up on a lot of the excess “baggage” that has been cluttering up our homes.
What are your favorite things that you’ll keep forever?
