About 150,000 years ago a volcanic explosion formed the small caldera now known as the West Thumb of Yellowstone Lake. The underwater profile is much deeper than the rest of the lake. Hot springs, mud pots, and geysers are encountered in this area. Photographs of this area are shown below.
