I’ll be honest: I haven’t gone into any of those other diaries that ask this style of question. I don’t think anyone needs to explain why they would for any candidate based on their race, religion, gender...etc.
However, asking this question based on beliefs is another matter. If you think climate change is a danger that will eventually spiral out of control, then why do you support a candidate who is not fully committed to fighting climate change. Full commitment means trying to do everything possible to switch us away from fossil fuels as soon as possible. It means no support for fracking. It means being clear that there will be no fossil fuels leases of any kind on public lands. It means not supporting large continental pipelines. And yes, it means not having ties to large fossil fuel companies (whether that means accepting $10,000 a minute to give them speeches or coordinating with them to introduce fracking to resistant foreign countries).
Climate change will very likely be catastrophic. DailyKos is one of the few places where I even see it discussed at all, and even then it gets very little traffic. It’s already had a large effect globally; in 2010, UN officials warned that severe drought in Syria potentially pushed 2-3 MILLION people into extreme poverty. That’s 10%-15% of an entire country (www.irinnews.org/...). The numbers in the linked article are a bit staggering. 80% of livestock lost? The media loves to talk about Syria, and yet you really hear nothing about this.
And for all our wealth, the U.S. will not be immune. For instance, California has gone through a very large drought, which we all thought would be mitigated by a super El Nino. And there’s definitely been some historic rain numbers...but they aren’t in the predicted areas. Thanks again to some great diaries, I know that the likely reason is that melting Arctic ice is creating a weather pattern that is pushing the rainstorms north to Washington and Canada. Given that Greenland is losing 8,000 tons (16,000,000 pounds!) a second (www.dailykos.com/...), I think we’ll be dealing with this weather pattern for quite a while. This in turn will lead to reduced crops and livestock raised in California, driving up food prices for everyone.
So, for Hillary Clinton supporters: if you are afraid about the effects of climate change, why are you supporting Hillary over a candidate who has a far better record and far better current policies on this matter?
