With budgets ballooning and costly delays, owner of the Atlanta Falcons Arthur Blank doesn’t need anymore headaches getting asses in expensive chairs when his $1.5 billion dollar Mercedes-Benz Stadium opens in June of 2017. Yet, Christian extremists are giving him just that.
Georgia lawmakers passed a bill this week, HB 757, that would prevent the government from intervening against any organization, business or person with “a sincerely held religious belief regarding lawful marriage between a man and a woman.”
Not only would this willfully bigoted bill cost Georgia taxpayers millions when the law is inevitably challenged in the courts, it will hurt big business too. Take for example the response by the NFL when asked by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution what passing the bill would mean for Blank’s bid to host a Super Bowl at his new stadium.
“NFL policies emphasize tolerance and inclusiveness, and prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or any other improper standard. Whether the laws and regulations of a state and local community are consistent with these policies would be one of many factors NFL owners may use to evaluate potential Super Bowl host sites.”
Georgia takes their football very seriously. All eyes are now on Gov. Nathan Deal (R) to see if he will veto this bill or cave to people who are in absolutely no way harmed by having to treat everyone with dignity and respect in the free market. I would love to read the correspondence flying between Blank and Deal. We’re about to see who has more clout in Georgia politics — Big Business or Extremist Christians.
