The Bronx.
Birthplace of Hip Hop and home to a long legacy of tough-minded and big-hearted souls who know what it’s like to live and love in the beautiful diaspora of New York City. Urban blight and the brutal drug war could not defeat the spirit of the people there. My father’s family was from there and because of that I've always had an affinity for it.
In the past few years it’s also been the site of some of the more hideous places of law enforcement injustice. Ramarley Graham, a teenage Jamaican boy carrying a small amount of weed, was killed by bloodthirsty, marauding cops who burst down his grandmother’s door to execute him in front of her and his 6 year old brother. The Kalief Browder story is perhaps even more tragic. His suicide was the culmination of one of the worst breakdowns of law enforcement, failed Broken Windows policy the NYPD Commissioner still supports, criminal justice, the penal code and correctional facility brutality, from top to bottom, all the way through.
With each passing more and more folks are showing they’re more than ready for Bernie’s clear and forceful message of unity and class power of the 99%.
His unequivocal condemnation of institutional racism/police brutality and the school to prison pipeline, and tying in the unavoidable conversation of how the working and middle class and minorities have been thrown over by the Democratic Party’s tactical decision to grovel for white upper middle class votes and Wall St campaign donations, are truisms for which the time has long come to set the record straight on. People are sick and tired of the divide and conquer bullshit. We want answers. Chronic dysfunction and the Revolving Door of DC have gone on too long, while the middle class slogs through an economic depression caused by the Economic Terrorist of Wall, while black and brown minorities are hunted by cops completely immunized from the rule of law because of a corrupt system. And if there’s anything you can say about us New Yorkers, we can smell a rat fraud when we see it.
Here’s the details of an email I just got from the campaign:
