Quite the to-do being made in the news lately about TN making the bible their state book. Oddly, the other day, I was looking up things like State flowers and birds and such. I found out that most states have a state drink and that drink is milk. Milk!
I quickly looked to see what TN’s state drink was, as I was quite sure it would be Jack Daniels. Nope, it’s milk. Boy, was I disappointed. A lot of states have state dogs, birds, insects, mammals, etc. I didn’t notice any of them having state books but I wasn’t looking for that.
I don’t really care if TN adopts the bible as the state book, I’m not joining the TN reading club. I’m much more concerned with getting the state drink changed to Jack Daniels. I’m also an atheist so I have no vested interest in the bible, I would think Christians would be concerned though, their holy book is being used for some nefarious political gain.
In the end it doesn’t really matter because the Governor is not going to sign this bill, he has some questions about the constitutionality of it all.
Still, it would be great to have a meet-up for the Nashville folks, and anyone else in TN who wants to attend. We have several new members who it would be nice to meet and we have voter registration to talk about. We even have T-Shirts.
Plus, I have a copy of the TN Blue book. Anyone can get one for free from their state representative. I was quite surprised by the quality of the book; hardbound, very thick and a little silk ribbon as a page marker. Has history, info on current members of the TN legislature and the TN Constitution.
The first thing I noticed from reading the bio’s that went with the lovely pictures is that none of TN’s legislature are atheists. In fact there are no Jews and only 3 Catholics. I was hoping someone could explain the various religions listed to me.
I haven’t gotten around to reading the Constitution part because, well, there are no pictures in that section. I’ll bring it so others can take a look.
So, let’s meet up! I’m thinking April 30th, a Saturday around 12:30, for lunch maybe? Just throwing that out there, I’m open. I’m also open to where we meet. I’m partial to Pie 5 but again, I’m open.
What I like about Pie 5 is their prices, their food, and the space. A lot of room. I can talk to the managers about saving us a space so we can spread our stuff out (T-Shirts) etc.
Again though, I am open to any suggestions. Keep in mind that we need a reasonably priced place, one that is not too loud and one that has room for us.
I’m hoping for a big turn out and we’ll need a few tables for the T-Shirts.
Please note in the comments what dates work for you and where you want to meet. I am really excited! There is nothing like meeting up with each other in person. For one thing, we tend to be more civil, but I’ll bring some little flags just in case we need them.
