This photo diary covers short hikes taken at three locations in Massachusetts between Gloucester and Manchester-by-the-Sea in late June of 2015.
The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Insects, weather, meteorites, climate, birds and/or flowers. All are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.

The first location, the Coolidge Reservation lies on a peninsula near Manchester-by-the-Sea. There is a trail, access to Magnolia Beach (walking only), and also the Ocean Lawn, which is the former site of the Coolidge family mansion (trail to there was not open on the day we walked it.)
The pond is primarily fresh water, but high tides and storms will push salt water and sea creatures into the pond.
The second location is Agassiz Rock. A small parking area leads onto a 1-mile trail that climbs a small hill and passes by two large glacial erratics; Big Agassiz Rock and Little Agassiz Rock. There are some low-lying areas on the trail and it can get a little muddy.
The third location was a trailhead for the Manchester-Essex Wilderness Conservation Trust. It was a very short distance down the road from the parking area for Agassiz Rock. The trails here initially ran alongside ponds and a cedar swamp before following old roads and having side trails into the surrounding hills.
Bonus photo — taken from the porch of the bed-and-breakfast we were staying in. Two wild turkeys came across a field that was across the road from the inn every afternoon.
