Let’s talk about the 2000 presidential election. Al Gore made an impassioned plea to the American public that we needed to reverse our reliance on fossil fuels. He seemingly won the popular vote but lost the election due to a recount in Gov. Jeb Bush’s Florida. Boo hoo.
Shortly thereafter, George W. Bush, in the shadow of his CIA-director-to-president-father, led us into war with Iraq & Afghanistan. Complete disaster. We’re still fighting these wars. The war has grown out of control spilling into Libya, Syria, & Yemen; spilling into Europe by way of refugees. The war has come back to America in the form of men & women who have been psychologically & physically broken from the inside out.
For a good while it even looked like we might engage in conflict with Iran. Folks connected to the fossil fuel industry seemed to be the loudest voices on the matter. After years of negotiations & a “nuclear agreement” Iranian fossil fuel is now flooding the market & keeping prices low. This is a great scenario for workers & the global American economy as a whole. Good work team.
Are the wars of Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Yemen are necessary for the continuation of the American Dream? Maybe war isn’t disaster. Perhaps it’s the lifeblood of our economy.
In order to bear fruit, capitalism requires fertile ground for the taking.
Eventually, fertility will diminish. Returns will plummet. New markets must discovered.
How does this relate the the environment? Who gives a shit.
I live on an island — a summer playground for richest people in the world. I witness first hand the power of Mother Atlantic. Every year we lose some of our island to erosion. It is most dramatic after a storm. It is sometimes welcome when a major storm takes away yards of dune beach & leaves us with a healthy sand bar. Sometimes a good break is necessary to enjoy the waves. Ride on.
Climate change is being left out of this election cycle because it hurts the corporate centrist candidacy. The frequency & consistency of record breaking months alone is enough cause for concern. We need more discussion from our candidates about how the United States can lead us into an era renewable energy & innovation.
