Catherine Cortez Masto, the Democratic nominee in Nevada to replace retiring Sen. Harry Reid, has been targeted in new ads by a Super PAC that is so extreme its previous efforts have been condemned by the Republican National Committee for being "racist or race-baiting in intent." They're returning to an old playbook, attacking this pro-choice candidate with ads targeted at minority communities.
A Super PAC trying to help Rep. Joe Heck defeat the woman who would be the first Latina ever elected to the U.S. Senate is trying to peel off Hispanic voters with a new radio ad.
America's PAC, using tactics it has employed before, is running a Spanish-language radio ad […] that essentially accuses Cortez Masto of supporting pro-choice policies that "abort our future." The ad's first line shows its intent: "Does Catherine Cortez Masto care that 3 out of 5 babies aborted in America are Black and Hispanic?"
As Jon Ralston explains, the motivation here is clear: "Heck, who has performed fairly well with Hispanics in his congressional races, cannot afford to lose that demographic by Romney-like margins in this contest." The Latino community is already highly motivated against Donald Trump, and Heck has to find a way to try to blunt the damage to his own prospects. The Masto campaign responded quickly, with this emailed statement pointing out the extremism of both America's PAC and Heck.
"This special interest group bankrolled by a billionaire donor to Congressman Heck has been called out by Republicans for 'race-baiting' and has links to the extremist hate group, the John Birch Society. The truth is: while Catherine Cortez Masto supports a woman's right to choose, Congressman Heck voted to eliminate a woman's right to choose, voted to defund Planned Parenthood, and supports Donald Trump, who thinks women who receive abortions should be 'punished.' Congressman Heck needs to demand his billionaire donor take this disgusting ad off the air."
It’s an appeal likely to fall on deaf ears. There’s no honor in the GOP of 2016.
