According to the Washington Post, Sanders will name 5 members to the committee that drafts the new Democratic party platform and Clinton will name 6. Giving the runner-up this level of input in the platform moving forward is unusual, and speaks to the Democratic Party’s desire to be inclusive and respect the views of Sanders and his supporters.
Sen. Bernie Sanders will get highly unusual say over the drafting of the Democratic Party platform this year even if, as expected, he loses the primary contest to Hillary Clinton.
The two Democratic candidates have agreed with Democratic Party officials to a new apportionment of the 15-member committee that writes the platform, according to Democratic officials familiar with the compromise worked out this month.
Note that this agreement was agreed upon by both Sanders and Clinton, which also illustrates Clinton’s willingness to be a team player. Hopefully supporters of both candidates can see this as a step forward toward party unity.
