House Speaker Paul Ryan is still not endorsing Donald Trump. Did you get that, guys? STILL NOT ENDORSING. There was some confusion on that point Wednesday night, as Ryan prepared to chat with Trump again:
… the call was set up days ago, according to one person briefed on it who was not authorized to speak publicly. And aides to Mr. Ryan made clear that he would not offer an endorsement in the call.
Any such anticipation is “absolutely untrue,” said Zack Roday, a spokesman for Mr. Ryan’s political operations. “The purpose of the call tonight is for the two of them to continue their conversation about unifying the party. We never gave any indication that the call was about an endorsement.”
A spokeswoman for Mr. Trump did not respond to an email seeking comment. News of the call was first reported by Bloomberg Politics. Earlier Wednesday, Bloomberg Politics and ABC News, citing sources close to the Trump campaign, said that Mr. Ryan was going to endorse Mr. Trump.
Ha ha ha. Did Trump’s people think Ryan would just give in and go with it if they got the media to report that an endorsement was coming? Of course, an endorsement is coming eventually. Ryan just needs a few more of these chats to make it look like he really held out in a principled way. Then he’ll try to find a time when Trump hasn’t said anything offensive in at least 10 to 15 minutes and he’ll endorse. Ryan should probably consult with Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus about how to swallow your pride and leave dignity behind enough to endorse Trump—Priebus has a major head start on him.
