For Donnie Trump, there are two things to do to anyone who says something about him that’s less than glowing. First he calls them names, and then he sues. Trump is so suit-happy that he has people rushing to put a foot in the free speech door before Donald gets a chance to slam it closed.
Congressional Republicans and Silicon Valley are racing to pass legislation to combat nuisance lawsuits against online speech — before a litigious President Donald Trump gets a chance to veto it.
GOP lawmakers are very concerned that their presidential candidate would rather sue people who insult his comb-over, rather than protect freedom of speech. But what can they do? Who can Republicans turn to in their hour of need? Who will champion the cause of freedom while the man at the head of their party is planning for the return of the Alien and Sedition Acts?
... the bill’s supporters are pushing to get the legislation passed while Barack Obama is still president.
“Obama will sign this. I don’t think Trump will,” said Texas Republican Rep. Blake Farenthold, a lead sponsor of the anti-lawsuit bill — who also happens to support Trump’s White House bid. While he praises Trump as a deal-maker who can get things done in Washington, he says the prospect of the billionaire’s nomination is “why I’m pushing to get it done” before Congress leaves for its fall recess.
When it comes to protecting freedom, Republicans depend on Obama. When it comes to “getting things done” they turn to Trump—which makes you wonder: Just what is it they are trying to get done?
Oh, and Farenthold? I’m giving you an 11 on the hypocrisy scale. And if you don’t like it? Sue me.
