A Democratic Senate, and at least the possibility that maybe we'll get a Congress that is willing to deal with things like gun massacres, is looking more likely all the time. That's brought out in a series of polls conducted for MoveOn by PPP. Read it and weep, Republicans.
- Arizona Senate: Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick leads John McCain, 43 to 41 percent.
- New Hampshire: Democrat Maggie Hassan leads Kelly Ayotte, 47 to 44 percent.
- Ohio: Democrat Ted Strickland is in striking distance of Rob Portman, trailing 46 to 42 percent.
- Pennsylvania: Again, Democrat Katie McGinty barely trails Pat Toomey, 45 to 42 percent.
- Wisconsin: Saving the best for last, Democrat Russ Feingold leads Ron Johnson, 51 to 41 percent.
Here’s just one reason that last one is so gratifying:
Much of this is Trump: 44 percent of voters say they'd be less like to vote for McCain because of his Trump endorsement; 47 percent are less likely to vote for Ayotte; 43 percent are less likely to vote for Portman; 40 percent are less likely to vote for Toomey; and 45 percent are less likely to vote for Johnson. The only way they can even try to mitigate that damage is to disavow and unendorse Trump, but if they haven't done it yet, it doesn't seem likely.
Oh, and if you're wondering about the Illinois Senate race, where Democrat Tammy Duckworth is taking on Mark Kirk? That's practically a done deal: Even conservative groups have abandoned Kirk. They've given that one up entirely and no one is even bothering to poll it anymore.
Yeah, we'll have work to do to push the new Democratic majority and make sure they finish filibuster reform to stop Republicans from blocking everything President Clinton proposes. But we'll have a helluva lot better chance getting the Senate to do shit if it's our Senate. Let's get them there.
