A Cry from the Cor (Core)* —
In case you missed gchaucer2’s cry for help and the sustained community response, four stories have graced the Rec list recently. ericlewis0 wrote gchaucer2 is okay after contacting gchaucer2, and she has permitted us to raise funds for her. She submitted a PayPal application, but it might be 2 or 3 days before her account is approved by PayPal. Onomastic might be the first diarist. You could follow Onomastic by clicking the red heart or the word Follow here. You could follow the Community Fundraisers group by clicking the red heart or the word Follow here.
Hold the presses! I just received word of a fifth diary in support of gchaucer2:
Matters....lovelovelove by TheBatchelor.
* Cor is Latin for “heart.”
As Long as You Are in My Living Room* … ;o)
Would you please take the poll at the bottom of this story?
* For newcomers, the founder of this blog, kos, compared an author’s Daily Kos story to a living room.
This is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.
Brief Summary of the Community Transcripts Project
We create transcripts of important progressive speeches and interviews which would otherwise not be transcribed. We support many individuals and groups. We crowd-source funds to pay our skilled Kossack transcriptionists more than a living wage. For more details, please see our Introduction.
Who Will Benefit from Our Transcripts? (Unchanged)
Transcripts support and empower many individuals and groups. For some, transcripts are a convenience. For others, transcripts are required. The following categories are not mutually exclusive. Many people will benefit from transcripts, including the following:
- Down-ballot candidates.
- People with many types of temporary or permanent disabilities and impairments (hearing, vision, cognitive).
- Creators, bloggers, reporters, editors, producers, students, and scholars who will be able to easily incorporate quotes in their writings.
- People who access web content via limited cellular data plans or dial-up connections.
- People who cannot listen to recordings due to time constraints and pressing priorities.
- People with visual memories who learn better by reading than by watching or listening.
- People who cannot participate at all without transcripts.
- People whose livelihood depends on transcripts.
- People whose acoustic environment prohibits the playing of videos due to employment, a sleeping or sound-sensitive family member or roommate, and/or sound pollution.
- Information seekers. Transcripts make video content accessible to search engines and automated web-archiving tools.
- People who do not speak or understand spoken English well and who depend on web translation to access information.
- People who crave the content of a video but do not want to inconvenience or provoke arguments with those around them.
- Members of Daily Kos who are paid to create transcripts.
Progress Notes
A Community Transcripts Project First (Unchanged): Congressman John Lewis gave a great speech at the Bates College 2016 commencement. Their Department of Communications sent our group the text of that speech as delivered. Once posted on the Community Transcripts list, it will be the first place on the web where the text of that speech will be available.
Another First (Unchanged): In the DK story by smoothnmellow Elizabeth Warren is Going ALL IN ON TRUMP, a Kossack (a member of Daily Kos) requested a transcript, and another Kossack whose name I did not recognize told the requester about our project. Here is that conversation:
libera nos: "I find it physically difficult to watch video in any format. If anyone comes across a transcript, or even a detailed summary, I’d very much appreciate it."
twingrace to libera nos: "Keep an eye on Kossack 2thanks. Isn’t he still doing that Transcripts group? I’m sure they’ll be on it as fast as they can."
2thanks to twingrace: "Yes, we are in the early stages of developing the Community Transcripts Project.
Thanks for the nod, twingrace! :o)
To my knowledge, this is the first such nod we have received at Daily Kos. Little by little, we grow.
Someone just nominated this speech [by Senator Warren for transcription by the CTP] this morning.”
A Kossack unknown to me mentioned our project. That pleased me.
Another First (New): Someone who is not a Kossack nominated a video for transcription, and it is a good one.
Question of the Day:
What are your reasons for supporting gchaucer2 and/or her book? If you have an update about her, please let us know. I may have more in the comments.
Welcome …
… to this Open Thread, brought to you by the Community Transcripts Project. (For newcomers, an open thread is a bulletin board with helpful people nearby who explain things.) This week we are a posting at about 9 p.m. ET. We are building a community — please feel free to join us in whatever capacity you would like to create. Click on the red heart or the Follow link if you'd like us to show up in your Daily Kos Stream. Please welcome others and share this article and share about the project for the benefit of all the progressives listed under “Who Will Benefit … “. The author of this story may decide to disappear in the usual manner at about 10 p.m. ET, but it is hoped that he will reappear in the morning, rested.

If you can answer someone’s question in the comments, please do. I am pretty geeky. You could ask me a Daily Kos technical question. Caregiving delayed tonight’s story; this could happen again.

About the Poll
If you have voted in this poll before, please feel free to vote for a different item this time. Previously we asked you to vote for your personal reasons for wanting or needing the Community Transcripts Project. Now we ask you to expand your perspective a little. We also added a “One or more of the above” item at the bottom of the poll. As always, we welcome your comments about your reasons for your choice. Incidentally, I made a widget to automatically populate this poll with items. It takes me about 20 seconds to load the items, and it will be even faster once I program a loop.
