Wildlife and nature photos from a day trip made to Lucerne, Switzerland during my recent trip to France. An overcast day with periods of rain and not much of a view of the nearby mountains.
The initial set of photos were taken while walking along the north edge of the lake and where a river exits the lake. (The left side of the above picture.)
Lots of mallards and swans about. They congregated whenever someone was tossing out food for them.
The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note any observations you have made of the world around you. Insects, weather, meteorites, climate, birds and/or flowers. All are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.

The next set of photos were taken up on a hill above Lucerne near the location where the diary title photo was taken from.
Saved this sequence for last. Moored at the edge of the lake was a ferry or excursion boat that was being used currently as a floating cafe. They are rigged out as side wheelers — I suspect that the “wheels” are decorative only. However, the side wheels on this boat were being put in use by a family of Great Crested Grebes. They had built a nest on the submerged part of a wheel and were busy hatching eggs and raising grebelings. All of this about 25’ from a busy pedestrian area.
